By Tyler D Falls, Thu Dec 8th

Food or intolerance?

One out of 3 North Americans believe that they are allergic tocertain foods, but fewer than 1 percent have genuine allergies. For most people food intolerance is the reason for thisconfusion between the two. The other 29 percent are usually justunable to tolerate certain foods, often because they lack anenzyme needed for proper digestion.

Although, some people are sensitive to lactose, a sugar found inmilk, however, they can tolerate other dairy products likecheese, yogary and sourcream. This is an example of foodsensitivity or intolerance, NOT an to diary products. Aperson with an allergic reaction would have a reaction to mosttypes of dairy, and usually the symptoms are worse, and longerlasting.

Sometimes children cannot tolerate gluten, found in wheatproducts, but will grow out or the intolerance. On the otherhand this could also be a allergic reaction to a protien inwheat. But the child would also react to anything that has wheatin it. Children can outgrow an aswell,

so sometimes itmay be hard for even a doctor to tell weather or not it is anintolerance or an without a blood test.

MSG (Mono-soduim glutamate) a flavor in foods, is a commontrigger for a food intolerance. It is used as a flavor enhancerand can cause flushing, headaches, and numbness in certainpeople. Its not known how much MSG is needed to trigger areaction, but it varries from person to person. Generally largeamounts cause more severe reactions.

Sulfites, used as a preservitive in many foods and wines, cancause sensitivity as well as trigger allergic reations. Itdepends on the person, the best way to check is to have a bloodtest done by a specialist. They will be able todetermain which type of reaction is causing you or your childproblems, and properly treat what ever it is.
